Now, a lot of these things are geographical because while we were on our Christmas trip I spent a lot of time with my nose buried in an Atlas and looked up all kinds of towns
Can you believe that I used to think that the only way to get to Alaska from the lower 48 was by air?* Yep. I thought you had to get on one of those fancy flying contraptions called an aeroplane.
* actually I have to qualify this one: i only thought you had to fly during the summer. because during the winter you could drive. on the ice, ya know. i know. somebody shoot me now.
I always thought that the Jersey Shore was actually a beach in Jersey that was next to a river.* Cuz I thought that Jersey was West of New York. Without access to the ocean.
*yeah, a beach next to a river that ran between Manhattan and N.J. and all the Jersey people sat on the beach and stared at the Manhattan skyline. wha...? sorry to all my N.J. friends. you all know i'm a dork.
I also used to think that Washington D.C. was right smack dab in the middle of the U.S. Because, hello, how can they govern the U.S. unless they are right in the middle of the continent?*
* i still don't exactly understand why it's a district of columbia and not a normal state...?
It's almost like out of sight, out of mind. I don't understand certain problems indigenous to certain states (and therefore people of that state) because not only have I never been there but I might not be correct in my assumption as to where exactly the state is...let alone what's going on in said state.
Are people on the East Coast as clueless as to what goes on on the West Coast as we are to them? Or am I the only one? And if I am the only one, then I'm passing the buck and saying it was my geography teacher's fault...that time he made us memorize the entire map just wasn't good enough cuz it didn't stick.
Please tell me that you have had some stupid idea or assumption about something that just wasn't true.

Okay so I'm decent as far as geography but I also used to think Crycut... and think to myself, why would they call it that?
LOL! I didn't know what people meant by the phrase, "The rabbit died" until I was probably 25. Just didn't think of it...

As for geography, I have no clue about any of the states in the middle or north. I've lived on both coasts in the south so I kinda have those figured out. I used to think the same thing about Alaska, except I figured you could take a boat.
I also thought it was "heldbent" and not "hell bent" until I got some really strange looks from my mom.

I hardly know anything about the middle states except that they exist somewhere between here and California. Oh and NJ is the best state ever, that's why I live here.

The east coast has all those teeny states..who can keep them straight!! I still am not totally sure where DC is and hubby goes there all the time!
my stupid assumption = i once thought ireland was its own island, like a mini continent...oopsies.
So funny! I am thinking stuff like that all the time! I am terrible at geography. I don't know where any of the middle states are and Europe -- not at all :) When I first started reading your blog I thought you lived in France! lol.

I grew up in South Dakota and people often ask how come I don't have a southern drawl.
I can't thing of anything specific but i say some of the dumbest things.
I'm pretty good with geography. My husband sucks at it. I blame the Wisconsin school system, cuz all the Wisconsinites I know suck at geography. For real. And it always makes me roll my eyes when my MIL says "You should come up for a visit". Ummmm....lady we live North of you, so we'll be coming DOWN for a visit. I know it's stupid to get mad about but, really, just look at a map once.
I can't say I've had those problems with geography, but I did think it was called a Cry-cut. I only recently found out the correct pronunciation when my scrapbooking friend said it. I'm glad I didn't say it out loud first.

Being a Canadian I am often surprised at the lack of knowledge shown on Jay Leno's Jaywalking segments. We know more here than those home grown people do.

I really don't get the District of Columbia thing either! Why? And why do people take the name of another state and use it as city name in their state, like Michigan City, Indiana. What's that for?

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't find out something I thought I knew is wrong. That sentence is so messed up.
I grew up back east and we thought the entire West was California. All those other states were somehow fictional. Maybe things have changed?

This isn't related to geography, but for years I thought the words to the song Young Americans by David Bowie went:

I was singing it a the top of my lungsin the car one day when my son corrected me.

I do that with an entire strip of states, starting with North Dakota at the top and then every state down, all the way to Texas.
I don't know what goes on in those states and as far as I'm concerned, nothing really happens in any of them.

I don't know beans about geography either. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I am the girl they used to coin the phrase "couldn't find her way out of a paper bag". Nice to know I'm not alone. Also nice to know that I'm not the only one that pronounced Cricut that way!
My thing is time zones... I'm not sure I'll ever learn it.

ha! well...I'm an East-coaster that grew up on the West coast...so I guess that makes me REALLY smart...right?!
There is actually a river that divides Manhattan and NJ...it is the Hudson river...you know the one the pilot landed the airplane on? My husband actually works in a building that overlooks that river. But...NJ also does have a coast that is open to the ocean too! ;)
you know what...I live on Long island and our town has a beach that is seriously just as beautiful as any beach in California...I never knew the East coast had beaches with such beautiful sand until I moved here...i was Shocked..it is warm, sandy, and a busy surf beach...who knew!?
ps...you should come and visit some Summer...it is seriously a fun vacation spot! ...and only 45 min form NYC
