It's My Perogative!

Or. It turns out it's not my perogative.

It's my prerogative. P-R-E-R-O-G-A-T-I-V-E.

What. The. Heck?!

Did you know it was spelled like that?!

How could I be this old, pride myself on my grammar, diction and spelling skills and not know that's how it's spelled?!

I'm kind of devastated. And shocked.

It's been a long time since I've had my world rocked like that.

And to add insult to injury...the proper pronunciation is actually: pre-rog-uh-tive.

Listen to some dweeb pronounce it on Webster's.

It's enough to make me almost, almost feel bad for publicly decrying the mispronunciation of supposedly both often, and loudly.

It's not supposebly, people!

Anyway. Here I was supposeDly all smart and apparently I'm not.

Still stunned.

Seriously. Did you know that was the right way to spell and say it?

My pet hate is when people mispronounce mischievous and add an unnecessary syllable :)

Crazy. I literally had this discussion w my BIL the other day. I knew about the ridiculous extra R but he didn't believe me. By the time I proved myself we forgot how we even started on the topic.

Well crap! That just throws my whole word world in a tail spin.

I will however continue to mispronounce it.

I'm a rebel like that. :O)

I had NO idea... I thought initially you were trying to pull one over on us...

Just looked it up. And you are correct!
For the record, Britney Spears and Bobby Brown are spelling it in the urban slang "incorrect" version. You should email them!

Ha! I actually DID know how to spell it, but there's no way I'll correctly pronounce it. I think these pronunciations should be voted on, majority rules, and that'll be how everyone is supposed to say it.

Crazy! I did not know it had that many R's in the word! I always had said perogative!

I'm stuck with the pronunciation from the song. It's the only way I'll ever be able to say it. I am a late 80s kid, what can I say?

It sounds like how a Canadian would say it.

You just blew my mind and I'm not sure I liked it!

Some words still attack me out of the blue like that too. It's such a pain, and some words just look wrong no matter how right I spell them! What a PITA!

Brandy@YDK said...

that's gotta be a totally different word. ridiculous.

I knew that. But don't feel bad. Remember how I always thought "prescription" was "perscription"? yeah, that was embarrassing.

What the what! So don't like that pronunciation. It is my porogative to say it how I want to!

Lourie said...

LOL! I am with Emmy! hahaha. The ones I hate are "warsh" and Sherbert" *shudder*

I had a friend who always said: Supposively! haha.

No. That...can't...Be right. No. No no no no.

Yup, I knew that one. But here's one that drives me absolutely bonkers (yes, I know I already am): Etcetera. or Et cetera (which I think is more proper). We ALL know the abbreviation, right? etc. So why is it that people CONTINUALLY say, "Excetera" FUCK! Kill me! Make them stop! Erm...end rant.

I am always worried about my spelling. Recently I can't seem to get my spell check to work on my computer when I need it to. I had a professor in college give us a pop spelling quiz, and I ended up doing better then most of the class, which is kind of scarry. LOL
You crack me up Mimi. Have a great week.

You're lying. Why do you lie, Liar?

I did know. I AM the General in the WordNerd Army, don't you know? Sorry, Meems.

One of my biggest word pet peeves? Yolk. IT HAS AN 'L' IN IT, PEOPLE! It is NOT the thing that is put over the necks of oxen. It is, in fact, a yoLk. YolkYolkYolkYolkYolk.

Ok, I'm finished. =)

WHAAAA? That is random, I didn't know that. Although, I don't really care cuz I such at grammar & stuff.

Not only did I not know that it was spelled that way, I also will be continuing to mispronounce it. Sorry :(

And supposebly . . . UGH! I HATE it when people pronounce supposeDly that way. Drives me NUTS!

Impulsive Addict said...

Bobby Brown did this to all of us. I just discovered this on facebook last week. I was blown away. WHO KNEW? I have TONS of pet peeves. TONS. It must be the teacher in me.

Jen said...

I DID know it was spelled and pronounced that way, because I happen to be sort of anal about such things. However, I'm sure there is another word out there that I am not spelling or using correctly (oh, the shame!)

You were probably misled by Bobby Brown all those years ago!

All I know is that I'm singing right now.

I say supposebly all the time. You are SUCH a snob! ;-)

Jen said...

I had NO idea!! That's so crazy! But thanks for telling us all...you learn something new every day, right? ;)

I too am shocked! I think I'll stick with the Bobbi Brown version. I can't make prerogative right in my head.

Just last night I saw that Friends episode where Chandler was talking about how he might have broken up with The One because she said it "supposably."

Love it!
